Model-Based service volume engineering development using CORE software
Dr. Erton Boci, ITT Exelis, Information Systems
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system is considered the cornerstone of the Next Generation Air Transportation (NextGen) System that would transform today’s aviation and ensure increased safety and capacity in our NAS.
One of the most important design aspects of the ADS-B system is the design of the terrestrial radio station infrastructure throughout United States. Service Volume Engineering (SVE) is responsible for the technical design of such infrastructure that would meet all system requirements. This paper presents the model based engineering approach adopted to support the majority of SVE design activities culminating with the development of a complex Geospatial / Radio Frequency entity-relationship engineering model. CORE software environment was selected for the development of such model based engineering environment.
Business Process Modeling: An Example of Re-engineering the Enterprise
Richard Schmidt, Vitech
This paper explores the challenges of business process re-engineering, and describes how systems engineering practices were applied to re-engineer the Information Technology infrastructure of a Fortune 500 company. This paper describes the customer’s challenge, identifies the approach taken to re-engineer the Enterprise, identifies the future directions, and draws conclusions concerning the applicability of applying systems engineering techniques to business process re-engineering efforts.
A strategic planning effort at the Savannah River Nuclear Site successfully utilized a model-based systems engineering approach to develop a plan for the disposition of stored nuclear waste material. In the beginning, many team members and program managers did not understand how systems engineering methods and tools could possibly help the team accomplish its objectives. This paper presents the lessons learned during the effort to produce a well received strategic plan, including the supporting information data package that justified our conclusions.
Privatizing Government Operations-A Systems Approach
Michael A. Duffy, Battelle Memorial Institute; William C. Sailor, Los Alamos National Laboratory; Eric A. Schmieman, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Loyd Baker, Vitech
The DOE is considering the privatization of a portion of DOE’s Tank Waste Remediation System program and has recently issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking new, qualified, private vendors. The key to a successful evaluation of proposals is establishing the right set of requirements to be satisfied by the private vendors. These requirements must be consistent with the existing requirements set developed over the past three years by the M&O contractor. This paper presents the results of a systems engineering effort that was conducted in support of the RFP preparation and had to be coordinated with an ongoing program.
State Machine Model of Information Processing in an Operations Center
Mark Ball, DRDC CORA; Ron Funk, DRDC CORA; Rick Sorensen, Vitech
This paper describes how the State Machine (SM) model under development simulates the interaction of the concurrent activities processing prioritized jobs from dynamically updated queues. It will also describe how a user can edit the data input, specified for a particular Operations Center, to study the effects of changing its business rules or operation parameters.
